Celtic Rainforests Newsletter No:7
As the Autumn closes in, here is an overview of what our Celtic Rainforests Project completed over the Summer!
Following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, we have been attending events left right and centre over the summer in what has been a jam-packed programme of meeting and greeting!
We have waved goodbye to staff and welcomed new colleagues, celebrated a Big Birthday, our educational programme has begun in earnest, we visited The Alliance for Scotland's Rainforests and organised multiple Invasive Alien Species Workshops with North Wales Wildlife Trust to train people to become fully fledged Rhody Hunters!

Farewell to colleagues and welcoming new members
It has been all change in the Celtic Rainforests Team!
Firstly, at the end of last year, we said goodbye to Helen, the projects RAPB Grazing Officer, when she moved over to Shropshire Council as their Offa’s Dyke Projects Officer.
Then in the spring, we said goodbye to Georgia, our Assistant Project Officer, who originally joined us on a post-graduate placement, and Stephanie, our RSPB Finance and Engagement Officer.
Georgia has secured herself a permanent position as a Fishery Technician on Anglesey, whilst Steph has moved over to Natural Resources Wales where she will be undertaking a similar role with the LIFE 4 Rivers Project. A massive thanks to all three on their invaluable contribution to the Celtic Rainforests Project, and we wish you all the best in your new roles!
But despite losing members of the team, we are delighted to have welcomed four new officers to the project:
- Emma Sweenie has joined us in a Finance and Admin Officer role, supporting RSPB with delivery of the project in the southern areas.
- Pip Gray has started with RSPB in an Engagement Officer role, supporting the work of the other Engagement Officers with a particular focus on the southern project areas.
- Matt Brown has also started with RSPB as an Assistant Project Officer. Matt will be picking up aspects of Helens’ work, whilst supporting Julia and the wider team with their work programmes.
- And finally, Cai Roberts has joined SNPA in a new Monitoring and Compliance Officer posts, where he will support the project officers with their extensive portfolio of contracts.
We welcome all four to the team - croeso!
Educational Sessions
Through the Celtic Rainforests Project educational programme, Anita Daimond of Antur Natur has been taking school groups out to woodland sites. They have been learning about the different trees, woodland plants, lichens, mosses, and the special nature of the Celtic Rainforest through their own experience and observations.
On one occasion a child within the class required a mobility aid, and having access to the SNPA tramper allowed us to include the whole class in the lesson ensuring equal Celtic Rainforests access to everyone
Over the next few weeks, she will be taking pupils out and some will be getting involved in vegetation management on some sites. Thanks to our project partners; ENPA, Woodland Trust, RSPB, NWWT and Dŵr Cymru; for their permission and support to use their sites.
A teacher training event open to teachers and other education professionals took place in Ganllwyd through the medium of Welsh. Please email anita@anturnatur.cymru to book your place by on our English language workshop to follow
